A HUGE thread where I start by working the formula for rate of precession for a motorcycle wheel
and use it to prove that motorcycle countersteering comes from angular torque rather
than gyroscopic effects. I got a little confused with some of my units in the middle of the thread
but it all works out correctly at the end showing that gyroscopic precession accounts
for a neglible *direct* effect on the bike. Getting the other guy to correct my units
mistake went a long way toward convincing him because he was forced to
do the math to "prove me wrong" and ended up proving my point.
Here's where I talk about countersteering as it relates to unicycles of all things
and give the formula for lean angle versus speed versus radius of turn which applies
to ALL balancing vehicles (motorcycle, bicycle, unicycle, monoski, snowboard, jetski, etc)
A much cleaner post describing nearly ALL of the various factors that influence the stability
and ability to turn a motorcycle. A summary of a lot of the other stuff above. Start here.
Here's one describing why putting a lot of weight high and behind the driver of a
motorcycle makes the bike more unstable. Applies to riding two up, and top boxes and such.
